Charlton Park April 17th, 2009

We took a field trip with our homeschool group.  We had tried going at Christmas time, but it got snowed out.  Well, maybe to make up for it, God gave us an absolutely beautiful day today!

We split into 2 groups and went to three different places on the tour, so I split them into 3 pages to try not to overload downloading times.  So if you need to skip ahead here's the links.

Our first stop was the town hall and we got to make candles.  Candles were very important to people then.  Not just something to make your house smell nice or have a certain ambiance.
No candle = no light!

Here, he's showing us various candles and the uses of each.  He showed us a courting candle, and the rack is to hold multiple candles obviously.

Here's our 1/2 of the group on either side of my seat.

He set us up with wicks (string) and told us to dip in the hot wax quick, then walk around the table and dip in the cold water as we round the table.

It took awhile for my girls to get it.  To them, both cans looked like the same substance.

We finally got a rhythm going around the table - a nice smooth circle.  Although we were starting to get a bit dizzy!

But after a little while you could finally see some wax accumulating!

We ended up using 3 of our candles for Sadie's 3rd birthday in 2 days!

Next stop on the tour was the Bristol Inn to make soup and butter.
